When to avoid, if you can
- Christmas and the Australian summer school holidays (mid-December to late January) are usually the most expensive time to fly out of Australia, and seats sell out early.
- Ramadan, and above all its last ten days, is the busiest and dearest time for Umrah. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year (in 2027 it falls around February–March), so check the dates before you book.
- Around Hajj Umrah for overseas visitors is usually paused for several weeks and flights to Jeddah are at their dearest. Hajj also moves about 11 days earlier each year.
- School holidays in New Zealand and Australia fill flights with families; outside them is usually cheaper and calmer in Makkah and Madinah.

Tips for a cheaper Umrah trip
Many pilgrims fly into one city and out of the other (for example into Jeddah, home from Madinah). Use a multi-city search on Google Flights or Skyscanner to compare. Check the official visa rules on visa.visitsaudi.com and the Nusuk app before you book.
- Look at the whole month. Our fare calendar shows the cheapest day across a month, and you can filter by airline.
- Set a fare alert. Tell us your target price above and we’ll email you when it drops (free, one-click unsubscribe).
- Shift by a few days. Leaving a day or two either side of a holiday often saves more than changing airline.
- Book the peak early. For Christmas and festival dates, seats on the cheaper connections go first.
📶 Mobile data when you land. A travel eSIM is usually cheaper than roaming with your NZ or Aussie plan, and works as soon as you land (check your phone supports eSIM).
